The 'invisible load' of motherhood.

Motherhood is a full-time role with no clock-off time, no lunch breaks, and no off-the-record hours. But beyond the physical responsibilities, the endless laundry cycles, the meal prep, the pickups and drop-offs, there’s an invisible weight many mothers bear.
It’s the mental checklist running in the background at all times. It’s remembering doctor’s appointments, birthday parties, and which vegetables your toddler suddenly won’t eat anymore. It’s the emotional labour of making sure everyone feels seen, loved, and supported—even when you feel like you’re running on empty.
This weight is called The Invisible Load, and it’s something almost every mother carries.
But just because it’s invisible doesn’t mean it has to be inevitable.
HOW TO LIGHTEN THE LOAD.
While some aspects of motherhood will always demand more from us, there are ways to ease the burden. Here are a few simple, effective strategies to help lighten the invisible load:
-
Delegate without guilt
You don’t have to do it all. Whether it’s asking your partner to handle the grocery run, assigning age-appropriate chores to your kids, or outsourcing where possible (hello, meal delivery services!), giving yourself permission to share the workload is key. -
Turn mental checklists into written ones
The mental load is heavy because it lives in your head. Offload some of that stress by writing things down. Whether it’s a shared digital calendar, a family whiteboard, or a planner that keeps everything in one place. Seeing it on paper makes it feel more manageable (and easier to divide). -
Prioritise your own needs
It’s easy to put yourself last when there’s always something (or someone) demanding your attention. But small acts of self-care. Whether it’s a five-minute meditation, a quiet cup of tea, or nourishing your skin with a luxurious body oil, aren’t indulgences, they’re necessities. -
Let go of perfection
The perfect mother doesn’t exist. You don’t have to do it all, be it all, or keep everything running flawlessly. Give yourself grace. Done is better than perfect, and your child doesn’t need a super mum, they just need you. -
Build a support system
You weren’t meant to do this alone. Whether it’s leaning on your partner, family, friends, or a community of mothers who get it, surrounding yourself with support can make all the difference. The simple act of sharing your thoughts with someone who understands can ease the weight you carry.
You are seen. You are supported. You are enough.
At Pure Mama, our team is made up of mothers who understand this firsthand. We don’t just talk about the invisible load, we live it. Here’s what some of our team members had to say about their experience with this unspoken burden:
Chloe - Digital Marketing
"When I became pregnant, I was looking forward to finally having “a break” after so many years in full time work. I (very naively) had visions of leisurely days reading books, finding a new hobby, and finally getting some time to myself. Ha. Ha. What an absolute shock it was to find out that being a parent not only takes an enormous amount of physical hours, but the mental load of someone managing 50 tasks simultaneously. It’s turned out to be the hardest job I’ve ever had!"
Abbey - E-commerce and Design
"Before I became a mother, I thought I understood what ‘busy’ felt like. But nothing prepared me for the mental weight of motherhood. The constant juggling of schedules, the remembering of everything (even the things no one else notices), and the way my brain never really shuts off. It’s not just the tasks; it’s the emotional weight of keeping a family running, of anticipating needs before they arise, of being the one who holds it all together."
Maggie - Sales & Partnerships
“Some days, it feels like my brain is running a hundred tabs at once. Work deadlines, grocery lists, doctor’s appointments, remembering to pack my child’s favourite toy for daycare. The weight of managing everything, even the things no one else thinks about, is exhausting. Learning to ask for help and not feeling guilty about it has been a game-changer.”
Yasmin - Finance & Operations
“It’s not just the physical tasks, it’s the mental exhaustion of always being the ‘default parent.’ The one who remembers the little details that make everyone else’s life run smoothly. I’ve started offloading where I can, whether that’s a shared calendar with my husband or letting go of things that don’t truly matter.”
Sammy - Studio & Warehouse
“For the longest time, I felt like I had to do everything myself. If I wasn’t managing it all, who would? But I’ve realised that allowing others to step in doesn’t mean I’m failing, it means I’m human. Whether it’s setting boundaries or carving out just five minutes for myself, I’m learning that I don’t have to carry the entire load alone.”
We know that the invisible load is real, but we also believe in finding ways to lighten it, together.
